Sei Whales (Balaenoptera borealis)
Lifespan: Up to 65 years.
Population: 54,000, about a fifth of its pre-whaling population where 238,000 were taken. The Sei Whale is now an internationally protected species. The Japanese continue to kill them every year for "research purposes".
Diet: Consumes an average of 900 kilograms (2,000 lbs) of food each day, primarily copepods and krill, and other zooplankton.
Group Size: Sei Whales usually travel alone or in small groups of up to six individuals
Adults: Length: 20 meters (66 feet)
Weight: 50 tons
FYI: The Sei Whale is among the fastest of all cetaceans. It can reach speeds of up to 50 kilometers per hour (31 mph, 27 knots) over short distances.
